PHYLLIS ODESSEY

Under The REAL Tuscan Sun

vineyardsAnne guided us down the driveway.  I opened the car door gingerly. An olive tree leaned over the roof of our rental car.  Was this a new method of dislodging olives from the tree?

Some friends suggested staying with Anne and Silvo Toccafondi.  In a separate building from their house, they have an apartment for rent. Located halfway between Sienna and Florence: it’s a great location for exploring Tuscany.  Even living room overivew anne and silvobetter, in no time, it felt like home. Rosemary and lavender bend over the low stone wall on your terrace; at arms length is wild argula; miles of olive trees and vineyards are the view out every window.

Ask Anne and Silvo for suggestions: places to eat, where to stock up on supplies or interesting towns to visit.  Silvo is a private guide.  He specializes in personal tours.  You tell him what you are interested in seeing and learning about and he works out an itinerary of where to go, how to get there and who to meet along the way. These are not the tourist sites you will find in a guidebook.  Silvo  has lived in the Tuscany his entire life.  Not only does he know the landscape, the vineyards, the churches, the towns, the osterias, the backwoods roads:  he brings you in contact with people who make Tuscany, Tuscany.

Our guide at La Foce, said she thought foreigners loved Italy more than Italians. This might be overview out the window

view from terracetrue.  In Silvo, you find a guide extraordinaire… whose love of country is backed up by an in-depth knowledge of history, art and culture.  If you are looking for a place to stay in Tuscany,  I recommend Anne and Silvos’ place in the sun.
