I couldn’t find it.  The memory was clear, but the photograph of swimming pools standing on end, along a roadside strip   in the south of France, was in one of my pre-digital albums in unknown closet.  When I saw, Van Gogh’s Ear at Rockefeller Center, I knew I had seen it before, just in another context.  The Scandinavian duo Elmgreen and Dragset have a new piece of public sculpture facing Fifth Avenue, heralding the entry to the Channel Gardens at Rock Center. Surrounded by iconic art deco architecure, Van Gogh ‘s Ear is a swimming pool on end.

I told my friend, that some people have called Van Gogh’s Ear poetic.  “Poetic! You mean pathetic.”  Let’s just say, there have been surrealists, who have come before Elmgreen & Dragset and have done it better.
